Currently, there are three different "External Tools" for embedding library links directly in Canvas:
Alexander Street Videos
Films on Demand
SuperSearch
Adding Links to Alexander Street Videos (also known as Academic Video Online):
After creating a module in Canvas (or to add content to an existing module), select the "+" to add content to the module:
From the Dropdown list of items, select "External Tool". This will bring up the full list of external tool options:
The first option is Alexander Street Video. Follow the link to search within Alexander Street:
After typing in your search, select the video you want to embed by clicking "Return Link" (You can also select to "View Video"):
After selecting the video you want to add, you will be returned to the "Add Item" menu where you will now see the link to the video and also have the option to rename the item, if needed:
Select "Add Item". You will now see the link to the resource in your module:
Films on Demand
Find "Films on Demand" in the External Tools list:
Films on Demand will open. Type your search terms and find the video you want to embed:
Select the "Embed" option for the video you want to add.
You will have the option to Embed small, medium, or large:
After selecting the video you want to add, you will be returned to the "Add Item" menu where you will now see the link to the video. The default page name for Films on Demand videos is "Films on Demand", but you can easily change it to the video title (or whatever you want the name to be):
After selecting to "Add Item", you will see the link to the video in your Module:
SuperSearch
Find "Library SuperSearch" from the list of External Tools:
Type your search terms in the search box:
If you know the exact title of a source, you can also search by title. Just change "Keyword" to "Title":
After running a search, you will have the option to further refine your search results (just as you would when searching normally in SuperSearch).
Look for the Limiters on the left, including limiters for full text, peer-reviewed, specific date, and source types:
Click on the "Add" button to select a resource. You will be returned to the "Add Item" menu where you will see the link to the resource and the page name. (SuperSearch does default to the resource title as the page name):
Select "Add Item" and the link to the resources will now appear in your Module:
External URL
You can also add links to other library resources using the "External URL" option.
You will find this option in the same "Add Items" menu where you find the "External Tools" option:
If using this option to add links to library resources, be sure to use the permanent or persistent link. This is the best way to ensure that the link will work for those accessing the source from on and off-campus.
See our FAQ on how to find persistent links in different databases.
